TREE63
South
African band, TREE63 began life as an experiment, when John Ellis
phoned Darryl Swart late in 1996 to talk about life, faith and
rock-n-roll. From 1997 to 1999, the band recorded two albums, Overflow
followed by 63. Their sound was unreservedly rock-n-roll, yet fresh and
compelling, and uncompromising about its spiritual message and
Christian convictions. In early 2000, the band moved Martin Engel from
band manager to bass player and met up with the head of InPop Records,
to finalize a deal for their American debut album, self-titled, Tree63.
This self-titled US release, an American-friendly greatest hits of some
of the best material off Overflow and 63, went on to receive a Dove
Award in 2001 for Rock Album of the Year, and the first two singles,
Treasure and Look What You’ve Done both went to #1 on The US Christian
Charts in 2001. Since their success here in the States, Tree63 have
toured in Australia and the US, appearing with Rebecca St. James, Sonic
Flood and also at most of the US Summer Festivals. Not known to stand
still for long, they recently recorded their latest album, The Life and
Times of Absolute Truth. The group was originally known as Tree,
reflecting on the imagery of trees in the Bible. “The Bible begins and
ends with a tree, and in the very middle is Christ, who hangs from
one,” John explains.
